Workshop 2 Details
Practical how-to workshop sessions @ 15:45
1. Introduction to iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad Software Development
Are you interested in creating iPhone, iPod and iPad apps? Chris Wood, the instructor for our popular iOS Development courses and an experienced iPhone developer will demonstrate some of the tools used by App Store developers and provide an overview of how apps are built and published, and how they can be used in education.
The workshop provides a good insight into the skills and technologies required for app development. It is suitable for all levels of ability, and no programming knowledge is needed.
Chris Wood (LSN Associate)
Chris Wood is an IT engineer and software programmer who has worked in IT for more than a decade and has a Masters degree in Computing. He currently works in education as well as presenting iPhone development courses for the LSN.
Over the years Chris has developed websites and applications in Perl, PHP, and most recently Objective-C for Mac OS X and iPhone applications. He has completed a number of commercial applications, including the MoLeTV and MoLeTVShoot applications, with Peter Edge and LSN colleagues.
2. The Mobile Learning System (MoLeSYS)
A highly intuitive online authoring tool specifically designed to create, recycle and publish learning activities and quizzes for a range of Internet enabled mobile devices.
Some existing products, both commercial and free, allow teachers to create simple learning materials and quizzes to run on some handheld devices. Limitations as to the format in which materials can be imported and exported/saved, limitations as to the number of compatible devices, especially hand-held devices and also licence restrictions and fees preventing wider availability.
Furthermore the complexity, usability and efficiency of existing tools is often a barrier to frequent and widespread use by teaching staff, and many existing tools are designed for use by those with more specialised developer skills. There is also a barrier if the tools and skills required to author and deliver learning content for mobile devices remain separate from the tools and skills required for delivery to desktop computers etc.
MoLeSYS has been developed to answer this need for efficient and effective solutions designed for use by teaching staff to create and recycle learning material and activities for use on a wide range of mobile devices.
The session will demonstrate the features of the tool and how you can create and deploy learning activities and quizzes for your learners.
Danny Atwere (Development Adviser, LSN)

Tony Malone – Insite
Malcolm Stewart – Visionradio
Paula Taylor – Riverhall Consulting
Danny Atwere has over 10 years experience with LSN leading on national teaching and learning initiatives. Danny’s role at LSN has involved supporting the development and implementation of three major national technology initiatives – QUILT, NLN and MoLeNET. Danny also has 12 years teaching experience prior to joining LSN and has led the development of the MoLeSYS tool.
3. Mobile ITQ for your learners
This workshop invites you to discover more about this unique mobile IT qualification. This is an ideal qualification if you have learners working towards Functional Skills, for the less enthusiastic IT learners (so they can be motivated to use the skills they already have using mobile devices) and it is also useful for those who might not gain traditional IT skills. Find out more about the Units, the training LSN can provide and ask questions of City & Guilds so you can get started in delivering ITQ in Mobile Technology.
The workshop can also offer you advice about a mobile IT qualification suitable for your staff to recognise and accredit them for the skills used in the support of mobile learning.
Di Dawson (LSN MoLeNET associate), Ken Gaines (Product manager for IT user qualifications, City & Guilds)
Di Dawson has been delivering, assessing and verifying ITQ since its birth in 2003 and recently has worked closely with City & Guilds and LSN to create the ITQs with an 'm' flavour. In the past 8 months she has been delivering the LSN training programme for the pilot ITQ for Mobile Learning - the mobile IT qualification aimed at practitioners involved in the delivery of mobile learning. The aim of the pilot was to upskill staff so they can confidently support learners achieving ITQ in Mobile Technology. Di is a MoLeNET mentor and has a great knowledge of ITQ.
4. 'Using Sony PSPs in the classroom - 10 things you need to know'
An introduction to the many educational possibilities of the Sony PSP will be followed by a re-enactment of a Y9 English class from the City School in Sheffield. The former will be led by Dave and Jason and the latter by Martin, with the assistance of three of his pupils. This approach allows for collaboration, differentiation, increased student engagement, increased independence in learning and personalised learning within a mixed-ability group. Delegates will leave with an overview of possible educational uses of the PSP and will also have experienced how a games machine can be used as a tool for detailed media analysis.

5. Moodle, m-learning and web 2.0 - integration not isolation!
How do we make our Moodle courses and learning activities dynamic and integrate the best of e-learning, web 2.0, mobile learning and indeed non technology based learning seamlessly and effectively? How can we use this integration of different technologies and techniques to improve inclusion and participation? This session will explore the various ways we can integrate mobile learning and web 2.0 with Moodle and how any course can be transformed into a richer, more dynamic more integrated environment. This will include a look at the various mobile Moodle developments and apps for iOS devices, integration with Xerte Online Toolkits and it’s potential for use with Android devices with the release of Flash 10.1 and an opportunity for everyone to share their experience of using Moodle with mobile technologies.
Ron Mitchell (LSN MoLeNET mentor)
Ron Mitchell is a MoLeNET mentor and also manages and supports the MoLeNET projects Moodle and other large Moodle installations.
