Molenet - Newcastle College
Year 3: Next Generation Teachers 2009/2010

Project Description
Mlts will be integrated into an existing blended learning delivery model, designed to meet capacity demands (particularly in shortage specialist areas e.g. numeracy and engineering) and support trainers needing to achieve Qualified Teaching Learning and Skills (QTLS) status. The project will equip teacher educators to maximise the potential of mlts, provide technology-enhanced experiential learning opportunities for trainee teachers who will then be able to integrate these technologies into their own teaching practice. Teacher educators from three large FE Colleges will be supported to devise effective strategies for using mlts to produce on-the-move reflective practice in a variety of media.
Aims:
The aim of this project is to explore the potential of mobile learning devices with teacher educators and their students to improve accessibility, delivery and assessment of the teacher education curriculum. The project will involve the utilisation of mobile learning devices including Flip Video Cameras, digital voice recorders, PDAs, notebooks and Smart Pens and identify a coherent strategy for embedding mobile learning into the teacher education curriculum.
Objectives:
• Development of a skilled workforce who have the confidence and competence to make sound pedagogical use of mobile technology for learning.
• Identification of issues surrounding the use of learners’ existing technologies and guidelines for staff
• Embed ILT and mobile learning into the teacher education curriculum
• Development of a cascade model with teacher educators modelling effective and pedagogically sound use of mlts
• Support on-the-move reflective practice using a range of hand-held devices
• Evaluate the effectiveness and benefits resulting from the introduction of the technologies adopted
• Identify best practice in driving forward the personalisation and learner voice agendas through the use of mobile technology
• Development of CPD programmes at level 6/7 to equip teacher educators to embed mlts into the curriculum
Target audience:
The main target audience is teacher educators in Further Education Colleges delivering to adult learners and adopting a blended learning strategy who will be particularly interested in the outputs from this project. Secondary target audience - WBL providers who have a greater need to support learners remotely, looking to identify strategies for making use of mlts to enhance the learning experience and record evidence of competence.
