West Nottinghamshire College will work with First Bus, Arriva, DB Schenker and Arriva to develop mobile learning to support Skills for Life provision and aide NVQ evidence gathering.

Aim:

To build upon the extensive delivery West Nottinghamshire College has within Passenger Transport, and its belief that mobile learning will aide increased and improved Skills for Life learning.

Objectives:

West Nottinghamshire College has Beacon status and over half of its income is through work with employers through Train to Gain and Work Based Learning. Of this 58% is within Passenger Transport including the following large employers: First Group, Arriva, DB Schenker, and Bombardier

Over the last 3 years the College has delivered over 1,200 Skills for Life qualifications with these companies, and other SMEs within Passenger Transport. Though the success rates are good we feel they can be improved by offering:

• engagement by union learning representatives outside of the learning environment
• practice tests that can be done by the learner remotely
• using GPS on buses and trains as a tool to develop literacy and numeracy skills
• using the mobile learning equipment as part of the NVQ evidence gathering and uploading to an e-portfolio

Through the use of mobile learning West Nottinghamshire College aims to increase Skills for Life engagement by 25% and improve timely success by 20%. Timely success will improve when learners can practice the national tests remotely and build confidence.

Target audience:

The target audience for this project is new and hard to engage employees in the Passenger Transport sector. Development of Skills for Life skills and progression to NVQ2 will help secure employment to new entrants, and improve the overall workforce when engaging hard to reach employees who have disengaged from learning and development. The learning context will entirely be workbased learning through train to Gain and Apprenticeships through Literacy, Numeracy, NVQ Passenger Carrying Vehicles, Team Leading, Cleaning, Customer Service, Rail Transport Operations, Business Improvement Techniques and Manufacturing
