Project Description

This project is responding to national challenges, disaffection with education at a younger age levels and re-training and up-skilling of mature unemployed people. We identify key challenges faced by learners, assessors and SME working remotely. We explore ways to help learners achieve in the face of environmental challenges and widely different technology skills. We investigate and incorporate personal mobile technologies to encourage learners to reflect on their learning, receive appropriate feedback; improve opportunities for assessment and ultimately successful course completion. We understand and respond to the challenges faced by business providers in supporting learners and interacting with the learning institutions.

Aims:

• Explore real time, demand led, and spontaneous assessment via video.
• Develop processes to maximise the impact of assessment opportunities on learning, through other mobile technologies, the institutional VLE and e-portfolio.
• Develop a sustainable model for increasing work based learning with increased efficiency for highly dispersed learning and assessment
• Re-engage disaffected youngsters and improve retention and achievement within the identified curriculums
• Promote sustained engagement through a package of support and guidance for work placement providers particularly with SME.
• Develop a model of institutional flexibility which supports mobile learning through e-administration.

Objectives:

We have drawn on the out comes of previous projects and practitioner experience to identify key issues and challenges of learners, tutors and 'placement representatives' who are working both in the institution but outside standard classrooms and beyond the institution and how they will achieve in the face of environmental challenges.

The objectives will be to:
• Review the personal technologies learners use and identify how these technologies can be used to provide them with differentiated support and learning materials where both learners and support is geographically dispersed.
• Understand the challenges of learners who are working both in and beyond the institution and how they will achieve in the face of these challenges.
• Evaluate the use of IP cameras to and instant feedback on the development of learner’s skills.
• Evaluate the technical support requirements and scalability requirements of wider use of mobile technologies with particular reference to the use of real time technologies.
• Use mobile technologies to encourage learners to reflect on their learning and receive appropriate feedback
• Develop appropriate teaching and learning strategies which meet the needs of the course, the students and the work well with the delivery technology.
• We will develop activities that enhance learning and increase flexibility when assessment can take place.
• Identify staff development needs
• Where partner business are involved:
Review the technology requirements of the partner to enable interaction with both the learner and the institution

• Evaluate the challenges faced by ‘volunteer’ work placement providers in supporting learners and interacting with the learning institutions.
• Understand how mobile technologies can be used to enhance the experience of work based providers when supporting young learners.
• Develop support materials and /or technology support packages which enhance the ability of the partner to work with young learners.
• Evaluate the technical support requirements of third parties and scalability requirements of wider use of mobile technologies
